At Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel, we support our local community in various ways including financial assistance for the village nursery school and Labayka Development Fund, an NGO that assists the villagers through a number of initiatives. Other support from Ras Nungwi includes local employment and buying fish, fruit and vegetables from village suppliers whenever possible.

Congratulations to James Jackson, our Senior Sous Chef, who won this year’s Chef Competition at the Zanzibar Beach and Watersports Festival. The competition was open to Zanzibarian and Tanzanian chefs working in Zanzibar, and consisted of three rounds. A ‘Masterchef’ cook-off format was used and chefs were judged on a wide range of cooking techniques. Many of Zanzibar’s top hotels were represented by 20 contestants including chefs from Baraza, Sea Cliff, The Residence, Gemma Dell’ Est, Spice Island Resort, Mnemba Island Lodge and Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort.
Owner Tim Hendriks, General Manager Angelika Haase, Executive Chef Samir Adbdalla Ali and the rest of the management and staff at Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel are extremely proud of James’ achievement in this competition. James started working at Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel as a Chef de Partie four years ago and has proven himself to be a highly skilled chef, eager to learn, and exceptionally creative.
Ras Nungwi’s Ubora Restaurant and Bar, offering cuisine inspired largely by the region, blends perfectly with its surroundings. Using modern and up to date culinary trends, the cuisine focuses on the abundance of organic fruit and vegetables grown on the island while fresh fish and seafood takes pride of place on ever changing menus that take advantage of the fresh produce sourced and delivered daily to the hotel kitchen.
If you have dined at Ubora and would like to share your experience, please feel free to review us on Trip Advisor.
We extend a warm welcome to Aquarius Divers, the new name for the PADI five star dive centre at Ras Nungwi, once more under the direct control of Ras Nungwi management. As one of the few hotels in Zanzibar to have it’s own in-house diving and watersports operation, originally established in 1996, we are able to offer a seamless, professional and high quality range of marine activities to our guests.
Aquarius Divers is staffed by a team of experienced professionals including two instructors and one dive master. In addition to scuba diving at over 20 dive sites, the centre also offers dive courses from beginner to dive master level, snorkelling, sailing dhow cruises, kayaking and big game fishing.

We are delighted to announce that Ras Nungwi opened its doors for the new season yesterday after two months of substantial renovations and maintenance work. The hotel is looking lovely and we are very pleased with our beautiful new roofs, much improved kitchen and revitalised gardens.
The hotel is completely refreshed, as are the management and staff, and we look forward to welcoming you to our piece of paradise.
Zanzibar’s wet season is well and truly upon us and Ras Nungwi is closed for the months of April and May. A huge amount of maintenance work is being done to refresh and renew the hotel in preparation for our next season.
Notably, the makuti (palm thatch) roofs over the hotel’s main areas and sea view rooms are being rebuilt and freshly thatched and the work that is already completed is beautiful! A lot of skill and manpower is going into this project and its progress is truly a marvel to observe. This level of work is only done every ten years although simple re-thatching is generally done every five years.
Big improvements are being made to our kitchen, whilst the garden, helped by the seasonal rains, is being prepared for our next season.
During the closure, our staff have a chance to take a well-earned break, normally a month in length, taken in two groups. The other month is used for training and helping out with all the essential closed season tasks at the hotel.
We look forward to welcoming you to Ras Nungwi for the new season commencing 1 June 2011.
